Providing specialized programming to strengthen the abilities of our learners, and their families, doesn’t stop at the end of a school day.
At Elves’ FASD Respite Program, learners spend Saturdays participating in therapeutic recreational activities designed for individuals with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder. Parents/caregivers are given a day of respite which provides them time needed to take care of themselves, and their family unit as a whole.
This program is operated by Elves Special Needs Society through the Edmonton Fetal Alcohol Network (EFAN) and FASD Cross Ministry Initiative.
Elves’ FASD Respite Program is offered at the following location in Edmonton, Alberta:

How the Respite Program Began
Over the past 40 years, Elves has always been about creating programs to help learners of all ages further their development. In 2000, Elves pioneered the first early education program in Alberta for preschool children with FASD.
In 2008, the program expanded to provide respite care after school, through the establishment of a partnership with Kids Kottage. Research into the impact of respite upon family stress levels, was conducted in 2009.
Parent Involvement
At Elves, the families of our learners also receive the supports they need to grow within our community. Parents/caregivers attend workshops that provide opportunities to gain information on FASD, proactive behavioural strategies, community agencies, and social activities in the community.
