When Should I Keep My Child at Home?

A friendly reminder of Elves’ policy regarding those times when a student should stay home from school:

When children/clients have a fever of 38 degrees C or more, or if your child/client has large amounts of coloured nasal discharge, they should be kept home until the nature of  the illness is clearly defined.

If your child shows any one of the following symptoms, they must remain at home symptom-free for 24 hours before returning to their program:

Fever – If you have to administer Tylenol during the night for fever, the child/client should not attend school the next day.

Infectious Diseases – measles, impetigo, pink eye, chicken pox, etc., until appropriate treatment has been initiated for more than 24 hours.

Diarrhea or Vomiting

If children/clients are experiencing increased respiratory effort, low oxygen saturations, changes in respiratory pattern or skin colouring, they should remain home to be seen by their family physician for assessment.

When in doubt regarding a child/client’s attendance, advice should be sought from a medical doctor.

The most important measure for preventing infection of any kind is washing your hands.  Everyday soap and warm water are a lethal combination to most bugs.  Rub hands together and use friction to remove the germs from the surface of the skin.  Wash hands before eating, after going to the bathroom, sneezing or coughing. Proper nutrition, rest and exercise can also help the body resist infection.
